Anstruther Lifeboat Coxswain Stephen Small stands down after 33 years of voluntary service with the RNLI at Anstruther.

Having served the last 2 years as RNLI Anstruther Lifeboat Coxswain, Stephen Small recently stood down.
Stephen is now replaced in the role of Coxswain by local fisherman Michael Bruce who joined the Anstruther lifeboat crew in 1992.

Michael commented on his appointment “I am looking forward to leading the team here at Anstruther and to facing the challenges ahead.
I would like to personally thank Stephen for all his hard work and leadership over the past years
and particularly for his guidance and direction in the lead up to this handover, it has been invaluable”.

Diagnosed with type 1 Diabetes in 2002 Michael was obliged to come off the Lifeboat crew. Together with Anstruther Lifeboat personnel,
Michael appealed the RNLI decision and in November 2003 set an RNLI precedent when he became the first diabetic
allowed to serve as RNLI Lifeboat Crew.

For his efforts and achievements Michael was presented the ‘Unsung Hero’ award at the
‘Lifescan Intouch’ Award ceremony held in
London in February 2006.

The Anstruther Lifeboat Station would like to thank the public for their support
in purchasing from the barbeque, plus raffle tickets and RNLI souvenirs.
The Open Day has for this year replaced the Gala, which has been cancelled due to imminent construction works on the site,
